What Countertop Replacement Includes

New counters are the highest-return single change in most Riverside kitchens. The per-square-foot number a slab yard quotes leaves out the parts that take skill.

Tear-Out, Prep and Templating

Laminate breaks out in an hour. Mortar-bed tile counters, common in the pre-1960 stock around Downtown, the Eastside and the Northside, often pull the substrate with them. We level and shim every base cabinet first, because stone telegraphs a low box as a rocking slab. Then we template off the installed cabinets, never off a drawing. A digital template captures out-of-square walls, appliance gaps and exact overhangs, which is why a finished top sits tight to plaster in an older Arlington bungalow. Cutouts for sinks, cooktops and faucets get laid out against the real fixtures.

Fabrication, Seams and Edges

Slabs are cut, polished and edged in the shop, then set and joined on site. Seam placement is a decision, not an accident. Joints go where the eye does not travel and the stone is least stressed, usually a sink deck or inside corner, never across a narrow section that will crack. Solid surface is the exception, since its joints sand down to almost no visible trace.

Sinks, Plumbing Trim and Sealing

Drop-in sinks (also called self-rimming) hang by the rim in a templated hole and hide the cut edge, which makes them cheaper. Undermount sinks expose that edge, so it needs a carefully finished profile and silicone-based sealants. We reconnect faucet, disposal, dishwasher air gap and drain, then seal natural stone before we leave.

Countertop Materials We Install in Riverside

Material sets roughly two-thirds of the price. Installed cost per square foot here, and how each surface behaves:

Material Installed per sq ft Durability Maintenance Where it sells
Laminate $20 to $60 Scratches, burns, seams swell None Rentals and flips
Butcher block $40 to $100 Dents but sands out Oil or varnish Islands, coffee bars
Granite (exotics $100 to $200) $40 to $100 Hard, heat-tolerant, chips at edges Seal periodically Orangecrest tract homes
Solid surface (Corian) $50 to $150 Non-porous, repairable, scorches Buff scratches out Seamless runs, integral sinks
Quartz $60 to $150 Hard, non-porous, dislikes direct heat None. Needs no sealing The Canyon Crest default
Concrete $65 to $135 Very hard, crazes over time Seal and wax One-off custom tops
Porcelain and sintered stone (Dekton, Neolith) $70 to $160 Heat and UV stable, brittle unsupported None Outdoor kitchens, slab walls
Quartzite $80 to $250 Harder than granite Seal periodically Alessandro Heights remodels
Marble Up to $190 and beyond Soft, etches, patinas Seal often Baking stations
Stainless steel $80 to $250+ Near indestructible, scratches show Wipe down Prep zones, pantry kitchens
Terrazzo Quoted per project Cast or precast, chip-repairable Seal periodically Design-led projects

Thickness and Edge Profiles

Engineered stone runs from 6mm up to 4cm (about 1.5 inches). Solid surface is typically about 12mm and takes its apparent thickness from a built-up edge. A 2cm slab is usually laminated at the edge to read thicker, which is fabrication labor, not a discount.

Edge profile is a real line on the quote. Eased is cheapest, bullnose softens the profile, and ogee is the carved S-curve that takes the most shop time. A mitered edge folds the slab down at 45 degrees for a thick apron or waterfall leg, and costs most because the pattern has to match across the joint. Stone edges are shaped with hand-held routers, grinders or CNC equipment.

Matching the Counters to the Rest of the Kitchen

New counters expose whatever they sit on. Sound boxes with tired doors are a case for cabinet refacing in the same visit. If the layout is the real problem, look at built-to-order cabinetry or a full kitchen remodel in Riverside.

Countertop Replacement Cost in Riverside, CA

Countertop-only projects here typically land between $3,000 and $12,000. A 28-foot U-shaped kitchen in Victoria carries twice the square footage of a La Sierra galley, and quartzite costs three times builder granite.

Scope Typical Riverside range What it covers
Chip, crack and seam repair $100 to $600 Color-matched fill, polish, re-seam
Edge upgrade or added cutout $500 to $2,000 Reprofile, new sink or cooktop cutout
Laminate or butcher block $1,500 to $5,000 Tear-out, material, install, trim
Standard stone, 30 to 40 sq ft $2,000 to $7,000 Template, fabricate, install, one cutout
Premium slab package $7,000 to $25,000+ Quartzite, marble, porcelain, waterfall legs

Five things move the number: square footage off the actual template, material tier (the jump from $40 granite to $200 quartzite is the biggest single variable), edge profile, cutout count and finish, and demolition surprises like mortar-bed tile.

A like-for-like swap typically does not require a permit. Moving the sink, adding a circuit or relocating gas usually does, through the City of Riverside’s Community & Economic Development Department or the relevant county building department.

How the Replacement Process Runs

Step What happens Typical timing
1. Measure and selection Field visit, square footage, slab options, range 1 visit
2. Slab hold You approve the actual slab at the yard 2 to 7 days
3. Digital template Measured off leveled cabinets, fixtures on site 1 to 2 hours
4. Fabrication Cutting, edge profiling, cutouts, polishing 5 to 10 days
5. Tear-out and install Old tops out, new set and seamed 1 day
6. Trim and seal Sink, faucet, disposal, dishwasher, sealer Next morning

Most Riverside replacements run two to three weeks from deposit to install, and fabrication sets that schedule. Plan on about 24 hours without a working sink.

Why Riverside Homeowners Hire Us for Countertops

Licensed and insured. We hold a California contractor license through the CSLB and carry general liability coverage. A certificate goes out before templating.

Templated off installed cabinets. Old Riverside houses are rarely square, and a template that assumes otherwise produces the gaps you see in cheap installs.

Seam layout approved first. You see the cut plan before the slab is touched.

Honest sealing advice. Natural stone gets an impregnating sealer at install, and oleophobic impregnators stretch resealing to every five to ten years. Quartz needs none, and we will not sell you a package for it.

Written warranty. Every project carries a written workmanship warranty, and our crews work Riverside and the surrounding Inland Empire.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does countertop replacement cost in Riverside, CA?

Most countertop-only projects run $3,000 to $12,000 installed. A standard 30 to 40 square foot kitchen in granite or quartz typically lands between $2,000 and $7,000. Quartzite, marble or a waterfall package pushes into the $7,000 to $25,000 range.

How long does the whole process take?

Two to three weeks from deposit to install. Templating takes an hour or two, fabrication runs five to ten business days, and install is usually one day.

Do I need a permit to replace my countertops?

Usually not for a like-for-like swap. Permits typically apply when we relocate the sink, run new electrical or move gas. We confirm scope with the City of Riverside first.

Can you replace counters without replacing the cabinets?

Yes, and that is the most common version of this job. Boxes have to be sound and levelable. Water damage or a racked cabinet gets flagged at the measure.

Do quartz countertops need to be sealed?

No. Quartz is non-porous. Natural stone does need sealing, and oleophobic impregnators typically stretch that to once every five to ten years.

Undermount or drop-in sink?

Undermount looks cleaner but exposes the cut edge, which has to be polished and bedded with silicone-based sealants. Drop-in sinks hang by the rim, hide the cut and cost less. Laminate tops almost always take a drop-in.
